The arrival of western science and economic interests to the tropics has dramatically changed the tropical environment and its ecology. This title discusses the ecology of the tropics and examines how it is different from the temperate zone where western science evolved. It is suitable for those working on projects in tropical regions. The topics handled include plant and animal production, ecology and resource management, and methods on interdisciplinary cooperation. Besides the compulsory modules, students have the opportunity to choose three elective modules from more than 15 modules related to the tropics and sub-tropics. In the second year of studies.

This paper offers a specific examination of the ecological problems facing one tropical developing country, viz. Costa Rica. This Central American country provides graphic examples of poor handling of natural resources, and projects aimed at environmental protection, reforestation, and sustainable use of tropical forests. Case studies are presented and an overall picture derived of changes in.   This book attempts to bridge the current gap between conservation requirements and commercial interests, indicating the possibilities for integrated management of tropical forests. The aim is to develop a justification and practical approach for the management of production forest as a supplement to totally-protected forest in the conservation of tropical biodiversity.

Landscape Ecology and Resource Management bridges the gap between the science of landscape ecology and on-the-ground land and resource management, relating the theory and empirical research within landscape ecology to the practical needs of resource managers. It offers both a conceptual foundation of applicable and operational theory and case-study examples that address ways in which . Race to save the tropics: ecology and economics for a sustainable future (English) Abstract. This book discusses applied tropical ecology and shows how it is used to improve economic development in tropical developing countries. It describes the benefits to be gained and the losses which can be prevented by applying ecology to economic.

This management-driven, comprehensive book on ecosystem ecology is the only one on the market that covers the entire field, linking conventional ecosystem-level forest ecology to forest management.

It features ecological site classification, ecosystem modeling, and strong sections on ecological diversity and the physical environment. ecology and management (e.g., Journal of Applied Ecology, Conservation Biology, Ecological Applications). In this edited work, international experts in fisheries management and ecology review and appraise the status of river fisheries, assessment methodology, constraints on development, issues and options regarding management and associated problems in both temperate and tropical countries.

The final section examines traditional knowledge as a challenge to the positivist-reductionist paradigm in Western science, and concludes with a discussion of the potential of traditional ecological knowledge to inject a measure of ethics into the science of ecology and resource management.Environmental resource management is the management of the interaction and impact of human societies on the is not, as the phrase might suggest, the management of the environment itself.
